Why go

Chabahar, in Sistan and Baluchestan, is Iran's only ocean port and feels nothing like the rest of the country — warm all winter, with surreal landscapes along the Makran coast.

Things to do

  • The Martian Mountains (Kuh-e Merikhi), eroded clay hills at sunset.
  • The Pink Lagoon (Lipar), coloured by algae.
  • The beaches of Darak and the fishing village of Beris.
  • Baluch embroidery and local food — try the fish curries.

Getting there

Flights from Tehran and other cities; long bus rides from Bandar Abbas.

Tips

Visit November–March. Check current travel advice for Sistan and Baluchestan province before you go; stay on the coast and travel with local guides.
