Why go

The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System (UNESCO) is a network of canals, dams and mills built by the Sasanians — water still crashes through it today.

Top sights

  • The watermills and cascades complex, magical at night.
  • Band-e Kaisar, the "Caesar's dam" bridge, said to be built by Roman prisoners.
  • Salasel Castle and the old town.

Day trips

Chogha Zanbil ziggurat (UNESCO, 13th century BC), Susa with its palace of Darius and the tomb of Daniel, and the village of Dezful with its old bridge.

Getting there

Buses from Ahvaz (1.5 h), Isfahan and Tehran; trains to nearby Andimeshk.

Tips

Summer here is extremely hot (50°C). Visit November–March.
