Why go

Shah Abbas I made Isfahan his capital in 1598 and turned it into one of the most beautiful cities on earth. Plan at least three days.

Top sights

  • Naqsh-e Jahan Square (UNESCO): the Shah (Imam) Mosque, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque and Ali Qapu Palace.
  • Jameh (Friday) Mosque: a thousand years of Persian architecture in one building (UNESCO).
  • Chehel Sotoun palace and its garden.
  • Jolfa: the Armenian quarter with Vank Cathedral and cafés.
  • Si-o-se Pol and Khaju bridges — best at sunset and after dark.

Getting there

Buses from Tehran (6 h), Kashan (2.5 h), Yazd (4 h) and Shiraz (6 h); trains and flights from Tehran and Mashhad.

Tips

Bazaar shops close in the afternoon and on Fridays. Try beryani (minced-meat flatbread) and gaz nougat.
