Why go

Kerman is the base for the Lut Desert (UNESCO), one of the hottest places on earth, with its towering sand-and-clay formations called kaluts.

Top sights

  • Ganjali Khan complex: bathhouse, square and bazaar.
  • Shazdeh (Prince's) Garden in Mahan — a desert garden of fountains (UNESCO).
  • Rayen Citadel, a mud-brick fortress.
  • Kaluts at sunset and a night under the stars in Shahdad.

Getting there

Buses and trains from Yazd (4–5 h) and Tehran; flights from Tehran.

Tips

Visit the Lut only from October to April, and always with a local driver.
