Masouleh travel guide

Why go

Masouleh climbs a steep slope so tightly that the roof of one house is the courtyard or street of the house above. It is one of Iran's most photographed villages.

Things to do

  • Wander up the stairs and rooftops at dawn before the day-trippers arrive.
  • Hike to the waterfall and into the beech forests.
  • Try local cookies (koloocheh) and walnut-pomegranate dishes.

Getting there

About 1.5 hours from Rasht by shared taxi via Fuman.

Tips

Best May–October; fog is common, which only adds atmosphere. Avoid summer weekends and Nowruz, when it is very crowded.
