Why go

Shiraz is relaxed, green and proud of its poets Hafez and Saadi. It is also the gateway to the ruins of the Achaemenid Empire.

Top sights

  • Nasir al-Molk Mosque — come at 8–9 am when sunlight pours through the stained glass.
  • Eram Garden (UNESCO Persian Garden).
  • Tomb of Hafez at sunset, with locals reciting poetry.
  • Vakil Bazaar, Vakil Mosque and Karim Khan Citadel.
  • Shah Cheragh shrine (dress code applies; guides are provided for foreigners).

Day trips

Persepolis, Naqsh-e Rostam and Pasargadae in one long day by shared or hostel taxi.

Getting there

Buses from Isfahan and Yazd (6 h), flights from Tehran, Mashhad and the Gulf.

Tips

Try faloodeh (rose-water sorbet) and kalam polo. Spring is magical — the city smells of orange blossom.
