Why go

Tehran isn't pretty at first sight, but it is where modern Iran happens: art galleries, cafés, street food and the snowy Alborz mountains right above the city.

Top sights

  • Golestan Palace (UNESCO), the Qajar royal complex.
  • Grand Bazaar — come in the morning, closed Fridays.
  • National Museum and the National Jewels Museum (limited opening hours).
  • Sa'dabad and Niavaran palaces in the leafy north.
  • Tabiat Bridge and Darband for evening walks and food.

Getting around

The metro is the fastest way to beat traffic and also runs to Imam Khomeini Airport. Use Snapp for taxis.

Tips

Many travellers spend only one or two days here — stay longer if you like big cities. Air pollution is worst in winter.
